Step 1: Choose a Good Photo of Your Vehicle
The quality of the original photograph makes a major difference. You do not need a professional photograph, but try to choose one where the vehicle is clearly visible.
For best results:
- Choose a photo where the entire vehicle can be seen.
- Use a photo with good lighting and reasonable contrast.
- Avoid photos where large portions of the vehicle are hidden.
- Try to use a photo where the vehicle is the obvious main subject.
- Choose the viewing angle you want to preserve in the finished artwork.
A three-quarter front or rear view often works especially well because it shows both the shape and character of the vehicle.
Step 2: Upload the Photo to ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot
Open an AI image-capable tool such as ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot and upload your vehicle photograph.
Then give the AI very specific instructions about what you want.

For our example, we uploaded a photograph of an AMC Gremlin and used this prompt to create simplified black-and-white artwork.
Step 3: Look Closely at the AI-Generated Artwork
AI usually gets you close, but you should inspect the finished design before using it.
Ask yourself:
- Does it still look like your actual vehicle?
- Is the body shape correct?
- Are the windows, wheels, grille, headlights, and major trim features recognizable?
- Did the AI accidentally add or remove important details?
- Is the artwork simple enough to engrave clearly?
- Are there unnecessary shadows or gray areas?
If something is wrong, you can simply tell the AI what to change.
For example:
“Keep everything else the same, but make the front grille more accurate to the vehicle in the original photo.”
Or:
“Remove the remaining background and make all artwork black on a transparent background.”
You can continue refining the image until you are happy with it.
Step 4: Keep the Design Engraving-Friendly
When creating artwork for laser engraving, simpler is often better.
Very thin lines, tiny reflections, complicated backgrounds, and subtle gray shading may look good on a computer screen but can disappear or become muddy when reproduced on a small metal surface.
For the strongest engraving results, look for:
- Clear black-and-white contrast
- Strong outlines
- Recognizable shapes
- Limited fine detail
- Little or no background
- Enough open space between important features
If your artwork looks good as a small black-and-white image on your screen, that is usually a good sign.
Step 5: Save Your Finished Vehicle Artwork

A transparent-background PNG is especially useful because it allows the vehicle artwork to sit naturally on different product shapes and finishes.
